Media Law Video Server - FAQ

Below are some tips and recommendations for improving your experience with the medialaw service.

For best results, we recommend using Windows Media Player (9 or above) on a computer running Windows XP Service Pak 2 and either the Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Safari Internet browsers.

Login Issues:

Windows

  • If you are using Windows, you must have XP Service Pak 2 installed.
  • Your user name should be:

    • Seattleu\youralias
      • the' \' is a backward slash
      • youralias is your email address before the @ symbol
        • Example: medialaw NOT medialaw@seattleu.edu

  • If connecting through VPN, you may have to use your alias alone instead of Seattleu\alias for the username.
  • Make sure you are using your current password, and that your browser is not set to automatically log you in with a previous version.
  • You may not have access privileges to this content.

MAC

  • If on campus, you DO NOT need to type seattle\youralias, just youralias.
Note, that this alias and password, are the same account you use across campus.

    • youralias is your email address before the @ symbol
      • Example: medialaw NOT medialaw@seattleu.edu

Sound Problems

If you are able to play video but cannot hear sound there may be one of three causes:

  • Is the volume muted inside:
    • your media player software
    • inside your operating system (check the volume icon in your system tray)
    • check the mute button on your laptop case.
  • You may be missing the ACX codec on your computer. This has happened with some Dell users after first receiving their laptops. Instructions for reinstalling this will be posted soon.

Playback Tips:

For best results we recommend:
  • PC Users: Windows Media Player 9 or above.
  • Mac Users: Flip4Mac plugin for Quicktime or the VLC Media Player

Playback problems:

  • Most contemporary media players can playback our Windows Media files including the current versions of Real Player, Windows Media Player, and Quicktime. However, on occasion, third party players may cause difficulties. If a third party player does not work with these video links, you may need to reset Windows Media Player as the default player for ".wmv" file types. If you need assistance with this, contact the Technology Help Desk.

  • If you are off campus and unable to stream any files, this may be a firewall limitation of your home network. The cause could be any number of things between your ISP (Internet Service Provider), your DSL or Broadband Cable Modem/Router, or settings and software firewalls on your computer itself. Here are some tips for narrowing down what needs to be troubleshot.

    • First, see if you can watch the videos on any other computer on your home network. If so, then you've ruled the problem down to a hardware or software setting on your specific computer. If you are using a laptop, you can double check and see if it can play medialaw videos while on campus.

If not, drop by the Technology Help Desk and they'll see what they can do for you.

    • If you have a laptop and no other computers at home to test with, check and see if you can play medialaw videos the next time you bring your laptop to campus. If so, then its not your laptop but your home network that is causing the problem. The temporary solution is to come to campus to watch your videos so you can get your assignment done on time. Then as you have time, try and call your ISP and see if their tech support can help you troubleshoot your home network and router settings.

Often times, the router and instructions for setting home networks up come from either Qwest (for DSL users) or your ISP (like Comcast, etc). Some default routers that are issued to customers could have various ports blocked for security purposes. While the law school Technology Help Desk can help with common problems and laptop repairs, they will be unable to provide support for home networks they did not setup or provide equipment for. Therefore, when you have time, resign yourself to spending some time on the phone while your ISP helps you troubleshooting various router and computer settings. Note, they may have you restart your router, so you may experience a few minutes without internet access during this process.

For streaming, we are currently using the mms:// protocol (TCP or UDP) on port 1755.

  • SU dormitories have very strict firewalls which may prevent various things from working. If you find you have problems accessing medialaw from the dorms. Please let us know and we'll look into it.

Shuttle Controls:

  • If you are able to watch the video but have no fast-forward and rewind functions, then you are only seeing the video as a progressive download, instead of a streamed filed. This could be because limitations on your home firewall are blocking access to streaming protocols. MAC users running the Quicktime player may also encounter this problem as well. However, if you wait for the entire video to finish buffering onto your computer, these shuttle controls will work.

MAC Users

Playback:

  • You can download a free copy of Flip4Mac from Microsoft which will allow you to view Windows Media files using Safari and your native Quicktime Player. To find out more about this product and download it, go to this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia

    • Limitations (progressive download instead of streaming experience):

      • You will only be able to see the videos as they are downloading to your computer. Therefore, you have to remain online while watching these. Shuttle controls will only work for the part of the video your computer has downloaded locally. Once the entire video is downloaded, you can scroll through the entire video.

  • If Flip4Mac does not work for you, some people have reported better luck with the VLC Media Player. This is a cross-platform media player that can be installed on multiple operating systems including MAC OS X. You can read more about this player, and download it from here: http://www.videolan.org

Login:
